ENVIRONMENT ISSUES
How we look after our homes is often reflected in how we look after our environment. Many residents and business operators in Seremban have little pride, or time, to look after their immediate environment as well as their homes. Perhaps it is the nature of their lifestyle that taking care of the physical well being is the only thing that matters. The environment is not their responsibility. Leave it to the government to take care.
As a result of this attitude, we have the litterbugs. We also have people who don't care about how their house and compounds look, and that indifference can affect you, their neighbors, if you are a concerned environment watcher.
Sometimes all we ask is some basic housekeeping efforts, like:
1. putting away the garbage where stray dogs don't scavenge and spill.
2. mow and upkeep the gardens regularly and dispose the trimmings responsibly.
3. stop littering.
4. stop polluting the rivers and drains.
5. recycle reusable waste like newspapers, aluminium cans, bottles and plastic containers.
6. to factory operators, keep toxic waste and used lubricants in drums for reprocessing at waste treatment plants.
7. to eateries, to dispose food waste responsibly rather than discharge and throw them into drains and rivers.
We also need to examine our whole attitude towards our consumption habit. We must avoid overbuying and over-consuming. Not only do such practices lead to unhealthy food intake and consequent health problems, they also lead to excessive waste generation. The used plastic bags, plastic containers and other non-degradable packagings will create a non-biodegradable waste graveyard that will overwhelm us in years to come. As population grows and consumption increases, the rate of waste generation will sky-rocket, a problem we are not even beginning to address.
The other worrying issue is water shortage. There is a fixed amount of water in the earth that is constantly recycled for the consumption of all living creatures. As mankind pollutes the water through the use of pesticides and industrial chemicals, the quality of water will deteriorate. Today, we depend more and more on spring water for drinking. Even then, some of the sources are of doubtful quality as they are sited too close to industrial plants that generate toxic wastes. More and more of the drinking water must be processed through chemical treatment and micro-filtration.
The usage of water for industrial purpose will increase tremendously over the next two decades. There is likely to be serious water shortage and greater pollution and higher risk to mankind. The question of owning your own water supply that you recycle for your own safe use must be seriously answered as water becomes more and more precious. In the near future, we may see household keeping some of the water they consumed to be recycled internally for reuse instead of being discharged into the sewage system or public drains.
Hopefully, the day of drawing water from the icebergs for human consumption will never arise. Otherwise, it will surely lead to serious change in weather pattern and causing global warming that will kill off thousands of people.
